Catherine takes her initial inspiration from landscapes and nature - from close to her home in Surrey, to the Dorset and Cornwall coast and from her travels abroad. She strives to capture something of the essence of a ‘moment in time’, the atmosphere and experience of a certain place, exploring the space between the abstract and the figurative. Her paintings try to encompass the energy of nature alongside that of our own presence - the balance of landscape and humans. She is particularly drawn to colour, light and contrast and aims to produce paintings with energy, freedom, depth and movement.
“Catherine’s work, primarily acrylic and mixed media on canvas, are abstract in style but take inspiration from the landscape. Her fascination with light, colour and contrast bring a freedom and depth to her work. I look forward to returning to her work in the future and to following her development as an artist.” Alistair Burtenshaw, Director, Watts Gallery (2018 panel of judges).
Catherine works mainly in acrylics, incorporating mixed media such as oil and pigment sticks, chalk pastels, ink and charcoal.
Catherine was voted ‘Surrey Artist of the Year’, 2018
